Letters from Iwo Jima

Stunning & spectacular. Rarely do I encounter such films that came close in making me feel that tingling feeling that almost made me cry.

This movie made me see what war is like in the perspective of both sides, in which they imagine either side to be monsters or cowards ... in the end it's the families of the soldiers that has lost. Everybody loses in war, it's an ugly reality.

This isn't one of those flicks that glamorizes intense battlefields, you will actually feel bad for both sides especially the Japanese stationed in that island. It can get bloody.

The music is amazing, even if it repeats variations of it across the whole film it never fails to lose it's touch. I heard a few persons sobbing & holding back the tears just across me, it really is a fantastic piece of work. I later found myself humming it while walking around the mall..

What I like about the movie is how it gradually shows how each character develops, they introduce each other as if they're blogging about it, um I mean writing ;-) The movie has some lighter sides to it that made the audience chuckle, there are quite a few lovable characters that'll put a smile to one's face.

There are quite a few details which I felt left out after researching about that battle, the number of days it took for the Americans to take over the island and the number of casualties. I found it amazing the Japanese were able to hold off longer than what the Americans expected, it lasted around 36(?) days instead of the target schedule of less than a week.

Great movie overall, I wish to watch it again.

Just found some tidbits of info : Iwo Jima was the only Marine battle where the American casualties, 26,000, exceeded the Japanese -- most of the 22,000 defending the island.
